A Perfect Day
As temperatures climbed toward the nineties, we drove past the lake at a state park and watched throngs of people try to find space on the sand and in the water. A little farther along, we turned onto a side road and into a small dirt pull-off. We walked through wild grasses, flowers, wintergreen and honeysuckle until we reached our special spot. No bathrooms, no hot-dog cart, no one smoking our screaming at their kids. No traffic, no fees, no sand in your face, no lines to tell you where you can and can't swim. Just a handful of people, laughter, cool water, two very amusing dogs with no need for leashes, and peace.
